In the process of working on my project for this class, I came across an article regarding the first FDA-approved self-administrable vaccine against the flu, known as FluMist. What caught my attention is the fact that it comes in the form of something you spray in your nose.

I did a little bit of research and discovered some things about intranasal vaccination.

  • These vaccines can either be in the form of a liquid or powder.

  • The way in which you receive the vaccine is similar to how one usually get's an infection

  • It causes 'both mucosal.. and systemic immunity,' but especially the latter of the two.

  • In the case of FluMist, unlike the usual vaccine, it is composed of a 'live attenuated' virus so there is a potential that one might experience 'more side effects.'

  • While this vaccine was not considered the best choice between 2016-2018 by the CDC, the vaccine has since been modified and considered as effective as other usual vaccines. It should be noted that this is not something unique to FluMist, but any flu vaccine, which must be continually assessed for certain time periods, ages, and strains of the virus.
